This place has been on my wishlist for ages! Finally made it to Dhe Puttu 2 weeks back.
Ambience
Nicely decorated, one wall of the restaurant is decked up with a puttu train. Though it was crowded, we were able to get a table almost immediately. Once seated, were handed the menu. And the menu literally cracked us up. Most of the specialty dishes are named after actor Dileep’s movies! After reading them all one by one, my9 year old wanted to know whether we will be able to see him?
Food
As for the food, we decided to go all out and ordered a mutton biryani puttu, a non veg thaali and one more dish with beef curry( don’t remember the name). We were served sulaimaani’s soon after the order was taken. And without much delay, the mutton biryani puttu and the thaali made an entrance. We felt the mutton biryani puttu was a bit dry but the thaali more than made up for it. I had opted for a marble puttu and my choice of nonveg were chicken, beef and duck. The thaali also had kadala curry and one more veg curry along with pazham pani for dessert. Now my daughter sadly doesn’t eat much non veg so she opted for the staple puttu kadala combo. As for me, I just started tasting the different curries along with puttu and diligently polished all of them off . The biryani puttu my husband ordered was not that filling and he ended up ordering a beef dish which packed a punch. I don’t remember the name of the same but the puttu ( a chiratta puttu) was packed with dry kappa and it was swimming in a sea of beef curry. What more can you ask for?
Service
A basket of pappadoms is served along with all the dishes and this basket is refilled as soon as it is empty! A big thumbs up for this! However, getting your glass refilled with water is a major task. The staff is always on their toes as this place is crowded all the time. We washed down the puttu with a round of piping hot tea and my daughter had a mango ice cream (weird, I know! kids!).
Overall, its a great place filled with nostalgia, especially for those staying outside Kerala. And after ordering all of the above, it costed just around INR1200.The humble puttu is definitely going places!
